As voices for the release of Dr. Kiiza Besigye grow louder every day due to his deteriorating health condition, president Museveni taken to his socials to water down any hopes of having Besigye released any time soon despite a 48 hour ultimatum given to him by political party leaders who converged at NUP’s headquarters yesterday.

Museveni has instead advised those demanding Besigye’s released to ask themselves questions like Why was Besigye arrested, and only a quick trial can bring out facts to give answers to that big question.

“If you want a stable country, the more correct question, should be: “Naye Dr.Besigye bamukwatila ki? Why was Dr.Besigye arrested?” The answer to that is a quick trial so that facts come out. Otherwise, you are promoting insecurity which is very dangerous for the country. Nobody in the world can easily give us lectures on reconciliation and forgiveness because that is part of our doctrine right from the 1960s”- Museveni posted.

Museveni further faults the Supreme Court for halting trials of Civilians in Military courts which he says were on a right track to try Besigye. He however, sheds a sigh of relief saying the issue is being handled on two fronts, transferring all cases in the military court to the civilian courts and also his legislators are processing amendments to the UPDF Act such that military courts continues to try civilians.

“Who slowed down the trial process? It is the Courts that pointed out some gaps in the Military Courts and they ordered the transfer of the cases to Civilian Courts. The concerned People are, therefore, working on two fronts. Transfer the files to the Civilian Courts from the Military Courts and the Gov’t and the legislators to close the gaps in the Military Courts.”-Museveni posted

The president further says Besigye’s sickness is just a blackmail tactic he’s playing because he went on hunger strike and it’s the reason he’s looking frail saying government has a hospital in Luzira prisons and have even taken him to private clinics so there’s nothing to cause alarm.

“On the issue of sickness, there is, first of all, a Gov’t hospital in the Prison. Besides, Dr. Besigye’s personal doctors have been visiting him and even taking him to private clinics. If there was need for any additional medical care, the Gov’t would be advised”-Museveni posted.

This means Besigye won’t leave prison until he faces trial either in the High court if his case is transferred to the civilian or in the same military court if the members of parliament pass the amendments to the UPDF Act which are said to be in the offing and will be tabled to parliament soon.
