Dr. Kiiza Besigye who was abducted from Nairobi last year and later tried in the military kangaroo courts over cases related to disturbing national security which prosecution says he and others committed them in Geneva Switzerland, Athens in Greece and Nairobi in Kenya continues to be caged at Luzira prisons.

Despite a supreme court ruling which barred the trial of civilians in the military courts and transfer of all the existing cases to civilian courts through the Director of Public Prosecutions, this is yet to be done.

This week Besigye appeared in Buganda road court over another case dating back in 2022. He looked frail and was seen struggling with breath but court declined to order for his release to seek medication.

Ugandan Doctors under their umbrella Uganda Medical Association today convened a press conference where they urged government to prioritize Besigye’s health and allow him seek medication than incarcerating him as his situation deteriorates. These say Besigye is visibly sick and should be transferred to Mulago hospital than keeping him in prison.

Speaking at the press conference, Dr. Shamim Nambaasa of National Unity Platform emphasized that Uganda shouldn’t lose Dr. Besigye same way Ssegirinya went. Many Ugandans believe Ssegirinya wouldn’t have died that early if he had been granted bail in time to seek proper medication.

The late Ssegirinya was in imprisoned for two years with Hon Allan Ssewanyana over their suspected involvement in the Masaka Bijambiya. These had all their bail applications rejected even when they showed evidence they were sick. Justice Lawrence Tweyanze continued remanding the two politicians as state attorney Richard Birivumbuka continued saying investigations were ongoing.

The Doctors also urged the ministry of health of quickly work on a supplementary budget to cover up the gap left behind by the suspension of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to be able to pay medics who were working in the agency projects than telling them to work for free as seen in a letter authored by the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary.
