Early this week, the General Court Martial sitting at Makindye was a concert of chaos and confusion as Veteran Opposition politician Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his co-accused Hajj Obeid Lutale returned to the military court.

The duo were kidnapped from Nairobi in November last year and are facing charges related to threatening National Security and subversion which prosecution says Besigye, Lutales and others at large committed in Athens-Greece, Geneva-Switzerland and Nairobi-Kenya.

What started as a confrontation between Lawyer Eron Kiiza and the court Orderly who tried blocking him from taking the advocate’s seat in the court turned into a nightmare as the chairman of the court Brig Freeman Mugabe sentenced him to 9 months in prison over contempt of court.

The sad side of the whole scenario is that court martial sentences are not bound to appeals in any other court and Eron Kiiza might remain in Kitalya prisons if all efforts being pursued by his colleagues hit a snag.

Now speaking at the capital gang today, one of those political radio talk shows in the land, Ofwono Opondo the Director of the Uganda Media Centre reveals that Kiiza was handed a light sentence even without a charge sheet.
