In the news this evening, former Museveni Minister Isaac Musumba has been sentenced to six months in Luzira prison by the Commercial Division of the High Court in Kampala over a Shs160 million debt which he failed to pay.
Musumba who is the former Junior Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development also former Member of Parliament for Buzaya county in Kamuli district was sentenced by Justice Patience Tumusiime Rubagumya due to his repeated failure to honor his payment commitments since borrowing the funds in 2023.
Hell broke loose when Musumba defaulted on the loan which prompted the money lender Mr. Charles Wakwale to file a suit against him at the Commercial Court in Kampala. Despite multiple arrest warrants of arrest, Musumba remained defiant.
However it wasn’t business as usual when Musumba appeared in court today, he offered to pay Shs10 million and requesting a 21-day extension to settle the remaining balance. However, Mr Dick Kisira who is Wakwale’s lawyer objected citing concerns that Musumba would flee and evade court as he has always done in the past.
Owing to the objection by Wakwale’s lawyers, court dismissed Musumba’s lawyers and ordered him to serve six months in prison or pay the outstanding debt to secure his release.
Musumba has been in politics for over 30 years, he was part of the constituents who made the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda He served in several ministerial positions. He was consecutively elected to represent Buzaya Constituency in Kamuli district in parliament in 1996, 2001, 2006 and was pushed back by Martin Muzaale in 2011. Musumba made a come back in 2016 and was pushed back again by Muzale in 2021.
