While announcing that he had dismissed all the Cabinet Secretaries for his Kenya Kwanza government after listening to the protesting Kenyans (GenZ), President William Samoei Ruto revealed that he will formulate a broad based government which will work towards a common goal for all Kenyans.

Ruto fired all ministers and the Attorney General Justine Muturi. He only retained the Prime Cabinet Secretary also CS for foreign affairs Musalia Mudavadi and these sweeping changes never affected the Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua.

“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent and irreversible, implementation of radical programs to deal with the burden of debt raising domestic resources, expanding government agencies and slay the dragon of corruption consequently making the government lean, inexpensive, effective and efficient”

This briefly ended calmed down the protests when all ministers were sent home and the GenZ even starting suggesting the qualities of Cabinet Secretaries which they want Ruto to appoint in his government.

A week later, Ruto appointed his first batch of Cabinet secretaries of 11 of which 5 had been fired a week earlier. These included Aden Duale [Defense], Prof Kithure Kindiki [Interior and National Administration], Davis Chirchir [Road and Transport], Alice Wahome [ Lands, Housing and Urban Development], Roselinda Soipan Tuiya [Evironment, Climate Change and Forestry]. During plenary yesterday to vet the 11 nominees, Ruto had switched Aden Duale to Environment and Soipan Tuiya to Defense.

The others included Debra Mulongo Barasa to the Health Ministry, Eric Muga to the Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Ministry, Julius Migosi to the Education Ministry while Dr Andrew Karanja to the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry and Dr Margaret Ndungu nominated to head the Information, Communication and Digital Economy.

Today Ruto has announced the remaining list of Cabinet Secretaries and surprisingly he has appointed four of Raila Odinga’s men from his party Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leaving other Members of Raila’s Azimio la Umoja with bruised faces. This has now disproved the president’s earlier Stance that he can never engage his opponents on government sharing.

President Ruto nominated ODM Chairman John Mbadi as the New Treasury (Finance) Cabinet Secretary and appointed Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi as the Energy Cabinet Secretary. Additionally, former Mombasa Govern Ali Hassan Joho has been named the new Mining Cabinet Secretary while former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya nominate to become the Cooperatives Development Minister all these are from Raila Odinga’s ODM party.

The appointments also include Salim Mvurya as the New Investment and Trade Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen nominate to lead the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry while former Attorney General Justin Muturi nominated to head the Public Service Ministry. Rebeca Miano who had initially been nominated to replaced Muturi as Attorney General has been re-assigned  to the Tourism and Wildlife Ministry. All these were fired two weeks ago.

Stella Langa’t nominated to lead the Gender, Arts, and Heritage Ministry previously held by Aisha Jumwa while former Machakos County Governor Dr Alfred Mutua who at the time of disolving cabinet as the Tourism ministry has been appointed to the Labour and social Protection ministry.

It’s a matter of how, when, why and which whether the new appointments will bring an end to the protests which are slowly crippling Kenya’s economy especially in the sectors of Tourism and business which are greatly affected by the GenZ revolution. Ruto has so far only brought in 11 new cabinet secretaries and retained 10 old faces whom he had two weeks ago.

It also leaves questions on whether the appointed opposition politicians from Raila Odinga’s party are a result of negotiations which their party leader has been having with Ruto to formulate a unity government or they made individual decisions to join the Kenya Kwanza government since only ODM party in the Azimio La Umoja coalition has been brought to the dining table leaving Martha Karua’s NARC Party, Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party.
