On 22nd December 2023, Nakawa West legislator Joel Ssenyonyi fell in things after he was elevated from chairing the COSASE committee which majority say he performed well and was named the new Leader of Opposition for the remaining part of this term. Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga was instead sent to the parliamentary commission.

However, along the way things fell apart as Mpuuga was exposed for taking part in the partitioning of Shs1.7billion which his party say tantamount to corruption and consequently recalled him on paper and replaced him with Francis Zaake still on party.

NUp’s wish to recall Mpuuga as their Commission would only happen if the current signature collection drive for the censure of all the four parliamentary commission gains the required number of signatures and is debated and get into their wish of having Mpuuga replaced.

Early this year when he took over office of the Leader of Opposition, Ssenyonyi complained of not being invited to Parliamentary Commission. However, parliament’s Director of Communication Chris Obore rested his worries and informed him that Parliament Commission meetings sit once every after three months.

Ssenyonyi has now felt the wait is over, he has in a strong worded letter to the Speaker of parliament complaining about being excluded from parliamentary commission meetings yet he has information that they actually take place but he’s not invited. According to Ssenyonyi he wonders if they’re shoddy deals taking place that they don’t want him to know about.

“I am however bothered that ever since i became LOP in January 2024, I have not been invited to any commission meeting, yet i understand that the commission has met quietly a few times in your office”- Ssenyonyi’s letter to the Speaker reads in part.

During the press conference which took place at the LoP’s boardroom, Ssenyonyi has also urged police which has arrested some MPs continue and investigate more about corruption at Parliament, and his hope is that they will cast their net even wider. According to Ssenyonyi, the parliamentary commission needs to be investigated too, because that’s the genesis of many issues.
